Electrical rotating equipment and machinery play a crucial role in many industries, from manufacturing, defence, transportation, energy and power generation. These machines are used to generate, transmit, and convert electrical power and they are essential to the functioning of many critical systems. However, like any other type of machinery, electrical rotating equipment requires regular maintenance and refurbishment to ensure it remains reliable and efficient. PPI Engineeri

A permanent magnet generator (PMG) is an important part of the brushless self-excited system for large synchronous machines. It provides ‘self-excitation’ through the permanent magnets spinning on the rotor shaft of the main machine itself. Thus, no external power supply is required for excitation of the machine. PPI Engineering’s in-house software programme for designing PMGs, ‘DCPMG’, has been undergoing an upgrade. To make the design process for a PMG quicker and easier fo

What is Partial Discharge and why test for it? Partial Discharge (PD) is an electrical discharge or spark across a void or gap. This can take place between two electrodes (e.g. in a motor, the copper conductor and earth) without completely bridging across the two electrodes — Hence the term “Partial”. These voids and gaps occur because of manufacturing processes, thermal deterioration over time, poor fitting of the coils, and coil movement due to looseness and vibration etc.
